I worked with Keith Whitworth as a federal law enforcement officer for close to ten years. During those years Keith was a police canine handler and I was the chief in charge of the national canine program for that agency.
Keith came to us as an experienced handler with his partner - K9 Benny. That team was an outstanding asset to the agency. When Benny retired Keith teamed up with K9 Argo - another great dog.
When Keith came to the agency, we were using a contractor to do all our training and certifications. Keith immediately brought to my attention the inadequacy of that training. That started the process of having our own K9 instructors which was a great benefit to the agency. Keith knew what bad training looked like and didn't hesitate to take action to correct that!
Keith was constantly training his partners (just as they were training him) and he was always available to work with other K9 teams to work through training or performance issues.
I worked with Keith on many assignments and watched him train and run his canines in real life many times and his partners were always spot-on! I highly recommend any canine he or Armament K9 puts their name behind.
I had the pleasure of working with Keith Whitworth while i was the Idaho State Chief Ranger, Office of Law Enforcement and Security, United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Keith started working as a canine (K9) handler with the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations branch. I was part of a panel that offered him a patrol position in the BLM Idaho Boise District. Upon his accepting the position, Keith and I began the process of successfully acquiring his partner, K9 Benny, from the Forest Service. This resulted in the first K9 team in the Boise District. Upon Benny's retirement, Keith and I worked together to acquire Keith's new partner, K9 Argo.
Keith is the consummate K9 handler. I observed him working his K9s in training (detection and protection), as well as on patrol. His handling was nothing but complete competence and professionalism. He was always in tune with his K9 partner and laws governing the use of K9s, be it for protection, narcotics detection involving vehicles of all kinds, and personal items such as backpacks and luggage. There were many times that Keith and his K9 assisted me with narcotics detection on traffic stops that I had initiated. I also worked with Keith and his K9 partners in the investigation and 'take down' of illicit Mexican drug trafficking organization marijuana grows on public lands. Several of which required such methods as helicopter insertion to the grow location and/or hiking to the vicinity of the grow in order to execute the 'take down' the following morning at sunrise. Keith and K9 Argo were certified in short haul operations (helicopter insertion by rope). This required both handler and K9, as well as a fellow officer, to be attached to a rope suspended beneath the helicopter and flown to the insertion location. Keith and his K9 partners also assisted several county Sheriff's Offices by successfully tracking and apprehending fugitives.
I cannot speak highly enough about Keith Whitworth's abilities to work and train K9s.
I met Keith Whitworth approximately 20 years ago when he was a first-year police K9 handler. I was National K9
Coordinator, K9 team evaluator and a trainer for the U.S. Forest Service and California POST. I was immediately
impressed by Keith’s skill and understanding as a handler. He and his dog performed all of the exercises like a
well-seasoned team. In fact, I remember asking him if this was this second dog because they were so good.
Over the years I have had opportunities to observe Keith with other dogs and other handlers. I have always been
impressed to see how quickly and intuitively he corrected problems with his canine and how well he was able to
help other K9 handlers correct performance problems.
